August 9th, 7-9pm at GHP, 2nd Floor
Nixi Tibetan Potters have been following their tradition of making black pottery inlaid with porcelain shards for 1000 years. They live and work in rural Tibetan autonomous region of Yunnan, China. Greenwich House faculty member Kathy Erteman recently returned from a study tour to Jingdezhen, China with 16 of the Nixi Potters sponsored by the Mountain Institute. Three of the Nixi Potters are visiting the US this August and we will have the rare opportunity to meet them, watch them demonstrate their techniques and view two films made about their practice. SUMMER PASTURE
A film by Lynn True Nelson Walker and Tsering Perlo
2010, USA/China/Tibet, 85:40 min.
Tibetan w/ English subtitles
Filmed in the high grasslands of eastern Tibet, with unprecedented access to a place seldom visited by outsiders, Summer Pasture is a rare and intimate glimpse into the life of a young couple and their infant daughter during a time of great transition. Locho and Yama are nomadic herders who carve their existence from the land as their ancestors have for generations. But now, as traditional nomadic life confronts rapid modernization, Summer Pasture captures a family at a crossroads, ultimately revealing the profound sacrifice they will make to ensure their daughter's future.
Summer Pasture opens in movie theatres in New York (July 30) and Los Angeles (August 6) as part of the International Documentary Association’s DocWeeks Showcase.

Photographer David Breashears to present photos of threatened Himalaya & central Asian watershed in New York City through August 15th, 2010.
The Himalayas are home to some of the world's most magnificent peaks and largest glaciers, which supply crucial seasonal flows to rivers across Asia. Yet they are disappearing at an alarming rate. This exhibition presents new photographs of these "water towers of Asia" by mountaineer and photographer David Breashears alongside archival photographs taken over the past century by some of the world's greatest mountain photographers. The comparison starkly reveals the catastrophic loss of ice during the intervening years.

Trace Foundation's ongoing series explores the implications of language standardization in upcoming two day event.
|
Throughout the world minority language communities have looked to language standardization as a means to maintain their languages and strengthen cultural integrity, yet this very process may also contribute to discrimination and social conflict. Together with experts on Hungarian, Kurdish, Tibeto-Burman languages, and the three major dialects of Tibetan, we will explore the implications of language standardization within minority communities. In this lecture event, we will bring together scholars who have worked extensively on language standardization issues for Kurdish, Hungarian, Tibeto-Burman languages, and the three major dialects of Tibetan to examine questions such as: What should be the role of a standard language? What are its pros and cons? What are the experiences of other language communities in implementing standardization? We hope to understand these topics for minority languages in the world in general, the Tibetan language in China in particular, and what practical steps can be taken. About Trace FoundationTrace Foundation supports the continuity of Tibetan culture and language, and strengthens the ability of Tibetan communities within China to meet their own needs. We implement and fund projects that integrate culture and development goals and respect environmental principles. Our projects fall within four sectors: education, healthcare, rural development & culture. Minority Language in Today's Global Society:
