TIBETAN ASTRO MEDICAL WEEKEND CONFERENCE AND CONSULTATION  |  DECEMBER 14 - 16

A 3-member team, led by Dr. Tsewang Tamdin, Visiting Physician to His Holiness the Great XIVth Dalai Lama and Mrs. Sonam Palmo, Senior Astrologer, and Mr. Tseten Dorjee, Personal Assistant to the Director of Men-Tsee-Khang (Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute), Dharamsala, India will be available for health and astrological consultations, lectures, workshops, and to display the Tibetan medical and astrological museum pieces in the New York City from December 14 (Friday) to 16 (Sunday), 2012.

Tibetan medicine is a science, art and philosophy that provide a holistic approach to health care. It is a science because its principles are enumerated in a systematic and logical framework based on an understanding of the body and its relationship to the environment. It is an art because it uses diagnostic techniques (pulse and urine examinations and questioning) based on the creativity, insight, subtlety and compassion of the medical practitioner. And, it is a philosophy because it embraces the key Buddhist principles of altruism, karma and ethics.


Tibetan astrology has two parts: astronomy (skar-rtsis) and elemental astrology (’byung-rtsis). Astronomy being a part of Shri Kalachakra Tantra, explains the twelve zodiac houses, planets, and the two shadowy planets of Rahu and Ketu. Tibetan calendar is lunar based and is consists of 360 days a year. Arising Vowel System (dbyangs-’char) is also a part of the astronomy and assigns a different vowel to each of the days of the month, and calculates its effect on individuals and nations. Elemental astrology explains the five elements, the twelve-year cycle, eight trigrams (spar-kha), and nine magic square numbers (sme-ba) for casting the horoscopes and so on.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:

Dr. Tsewang Tamdin graduated from Tibetan Medical College in 1978. In 1987 and 1999, he received the “Menrampa Chungwa” and “Menrampa Dringwa” Degree in traditional Tibetan medicine respectively. Dr. Tamdin served at the Nizamuddin branch clinic in New Delhi for 18 years. He has also served as the Director of Pharmaceutical Department, Principal of Men-Tsee-Khang College, Director of Men-Tsee-Khang and Chairman of the Academic Council of Tibetan Medicine and Astrology. He is currently one of the five Visiting Doctors to His Holiness the Great XIVth Dalai Lama. He has visited Great Britain, Switzerland, Holland, Poland, Ireland, France and Germany for medical conference, consultations, lectures and exhibitions on traditional Tibetan Medicine. Dr. Tamdin examines the patients’ pulse and the first morning urine specimen to diagnose the physical and mental health. He gives advice on dietary and behavioral changes and may also recommend nutritional supplements to uplift the physical and mental wellbeing.

The main objective of Men-Tsee-Khang is to preserve, promote and practise Sowa Rigpa, the ancient Tibetan system of medicine, astronomy and astrology. It also aims to improve the health and sanitation of the refugees in particular and the public in general and to establish dispensaries in order to provide accessible health care to the people regardless of caste, creed or colour.

Education and Higher Studies in the fields of Tibetan Medicine and Astrology, Research and collaboration with scholars and institutes in India and abroad between different healing systems and to produce Tibetan medicines in an environmentally sensitive manner are the important goals in the development of this ancient healing system.
