About the Presenters:
Anupama Bhagwat, born in family of musicians, began her training in sitar in Bhilai with Shri R. N. Verma at the age of nine. She then commenced, at thirteen, her tutelage with Pandit Shri Bimalendu Mukherjee, a doyen of the famous Imdadkhani Gharana which is justly renowned for its fluency and grace. Under her Guruji’s inspiring guidance, Anupama has acquired the finesse and technical nuances of the Gayaki style, while bringing out its lyrical beauty with the emotive cadences of the sitar.
Anupama has been conferred the title Surmani, by Sur Sringar Sansad, Bombay (1995). Early on, she had won First Position in the All India Radio (AIR) Music Competition (1994), as well as a HRD Scholarship from the Government of India (1993-1996). She is a graded AIR artiste.
Anupama has obtained her Masters in music from Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, India; and received grants in ‘00, ‘02, ‘04, and ‘08, from the Ohio Arts Council (USA).
She has appeared on Doordarshan National Television (India), WKCR (New York City), WDPR (Dayton Public Radio), WEFT (Champaign, IL), Mood Indigo (California Arts TV).
Anupama has collaborated with noted musicians from the Carnatic genre, through Jugalbandis (veena, flute, and violin). On the world music front, Anupama has performed in Global Rhythms, Lotus Festival, and Cincinnati Choir etc.
Anupama, a refreshingly versatile sitarist of the current generation, has performed to critical acclaim in India, USA/Canada, UK, Italy, France, Switzerland, and Brazil. One of the leading disciples of the world-renowned Pandit Shri Bimalendu Mukherjee, her
sensitivity and erudition has taken her to the highest echelons of the modern genre, while remaining true to tradition.
Anupama has imbibed the vigor that is a hallmark of her Gharana: scintillating fast taans, mastery of the meditative alaap and brilliant fluency of melody (raag bhava), all the while maintaining her technical virtuosity. Anupama has been lauded by the connoisseurs in India for her performances at prestigious festivals and venues such as: Ustad Amir Khan Smriti Samaroh (Indore), Swami Haridas Samaroh, Saptak (Ahmedabad), Sankat Mochan Samaroh (Varanasi), India International Center (New Delhi), Sangeet Research Academy (Kolkata), Baba HarBallabh Samaroh-Vasant Utsav (Jalandhar), KM Conservatory (Chennai), etc.
Anupama’s repertoire of performances world-wide span major universities and conservatories, notably: Ali Akbar Khan Tribute Concert (Berkeley, USA), MIT Fall Concert Series (Boston, USA), Basant Bahar (California), U Penn, Ole Miss (USA), Asian Arts Museum (San Francisco), U of Victoria & Calgary, Musée Guimet, Paris, Musée Des Beaux Arts, Angers, France, and Ali Akbar Khan School of Music, Basel, Switzerland.
