About the Event
Â
Grounded in the insights of the four noble truths and the practice of fourfold
mindfulness, the second class of the Four Year Program teaches the contemplative
science of self-healing based on the Nalanda tradition. Given this, the class turns to
the distinctive understanding of mind and its transformation mapped out in the
scientific teachings (abhidharma) common to all forms of Buddhism. The focus
here is on understanding how this scientific typology maps the journey from bondage
to freedom in ways that allow practitioners to make tangible progress through
mindfulness, insight, and life-change.
Â
As for practice, the course guides students through the gradual, five step practice
outlined in the Nalanda tradition: discursive learning, analytic reflection, positive
motivation, focused contemplation, and practical application. The focus here is on
the way deep mindfulness matures into combined insight and quiescence, which
allows the integration of cognitive, emotional and behavioral learning and change.
