About the Event

A yogi is someone who delights in taking a vacation from the stress and anxieties of daily life to find union with the divine. Each year the New York Jivamukti School offers this rare opportunity to join together in the Catskills in an intimate retreat guaranteed to reinvigorate the body, refresh the mind, and rejuvenate the spirit. Come to Menla’s magical mountain environment and reaffirm your commitment to the great adventure which is your life.
Jivamukti means “liberation while living.” This modern style of yoga emerged in 1984 from one of New York City’s best-known yoga studios. Founders David Life and Sharon Gannon incorporated their study of ashtanga yoga under Shri K. Pattabhi Jois with spiritual teachings, placing special emphasis on how to apply yogic philosophy to daily life. Jivamukti is a vinyasa style practice. Each class has a different theme, which is explored through yoga scripture, chanting, meditation, asana, pranayama, and music. In addition to yoga practice, come prepared for hiking, swimming, singing, dancing, and a lot of fun! An optional sweat lodge will close the weekend after lunch on Sunday.
Note: All levels welcome—the only prerequisite is a sense of adventure.
Dechen Thurman is an advanced certified teacher from the Jivamukti Yoga school. The son and long-time student of his father and mother, Robert and Nena Thurman, he has studied with numerous Tibetan lamas and other Buddhist teachers.
Shyam Das is a well-known devotional practitioner, author, and musician, who presents Bhakti Yoga programs that combine ecstatic kirtan singing with stories and teachings from the path of devotion. He speaks from his background as a Vedic scholar and Sanskrit translator to share the philosophy of non-dual reality. He will lead Friday and Saturday evenings’ satsang.
